When the snow melts and the aroma of spring fills the air, people all around the country walk out to their yards to begin landscaping projects to improve their homes. These tasks are enjoyable for me, but the large costs from Lowe’s and House Depot on my credit card are not. Even the best landscaping jobs appear to be fairly priced, since supplies accumulate quickly. I’ve discovered that skipping the expensive supplies and opting for cheaper alternatives such as prior picket pallets is a good strategy. I’ve used them for a variety of chores, and I can acquire them for free at three different sites throughout the city!
They are frequently dismantled and put to other creative uses. If you want a more rustic aesthetic, leave them unfinished, or finish them for a more polished effect.
Once you’ve gotten your hands on some pallets, inspect them for damage. Sort the broken pallets from the ones that are still usable. Pallets in good shape will provide you with more slats to work with, but broken pallets may frequently have only a few slats and rails.
Following that, you must orient a pallet such that the slats run horizontally. The rails are the heavier boards around the perimeter and in the center, while the slats are the thinner boards that make up the pallet’s floor. Slats on the top and back of certain pallets provide you with additional wood to work with. With needle-nose pliers, you’ll be able to pull out all of the staples. With a paint pen, mark any nail heads you see on the pallet.
