Growing up with a little garden, producing plants in pots was my first taste of growing my own food. From the chives in the big garden pots, to the little pots of mint and coriander sitting on the kitchen windowsill, these experiences were the first to pique my interest in gardening.

As more and more people are looking to branch out in their experimentation with edible crops, it’s becoming very clear that green finger fever isn’t just confined to the countryside.

Urban agriculture is really taking off, with people growing food in the most improbable places: rooftops, balconies, windowsills, and every other little nook and cranny that is available to them.

Growing food in pots is often the easiest way to do this. Able to fit perfectly in little corners of any city, container growing offers the perfect way for people with limited space to get into edible gardening.

Pots are obviously not just for city dwellers – they can also offer a valuable alternative if your soil is too poor to grow in, and can often be much more accessible to growers with physical differences and disabilities.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are perfect for eating straight off the vine or you can just toss them in salads or pickling. Well, you can grow them in medium to large-sized pots and in grow bags. The ideal size of the container is 12 inches deep but it totally depends on the type of cucumber you want to grow. Both bush and vine cucumbers are growable in containers. Use well rich soil and compost to harvest healthy cucumbers every season.

Okra

Okra is also called a ladies finger is one of the most popular vegetables in most of the countries. You can easily grow okra in medium-sized pots and enjoy it fresh.

Peppers

Bell peppers and chilies love extra heat of summer and exposure to all day long direct sunlight. Choose a container that is wide enough and if you’re growing them in hot climates provide them shade from afternoon direct sunlight.

Zucchini

Summer is the best time to grow zucchini which is known as warm weather crop. It’s really productive in containers, so plant them in 12 inches wide and deep container and place it in full sun. Fertilizing it from time to time or once in a month will you a healthy harvest.

Beans

Bush beans and pole beans grow well in containers or pots. Bush beans are short and pole beans are tall and need support for their healthier growth. It’s better to grow pole beans in containers as they are productive and use vertical space efficiently. 8-10 inches deep pot works best to grow pole beans and maintain a spacing of 3-4 inches between each plant.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are one of the best vegetables to grow in containers. They generally need a long growing season with plenty of heat and sun at least 6-8 hours a day. However, some patio and bush tomatoes have a shorter growing season and its best to plant tomatoes as soon as the weather warms up.
